One Week To Go Until The North Face® Kalymnos Climbing Festival Begins
The North Face®, the world’s premier supplier of authentic, innovative and technically advanced outdoor apparel, equipment and footwear, announces final programme and competition details of The North Face® Kalymnos Climbing Festival in Greece, 27th-30th September, 2012.
One of the most anticipated weekends of the climbing season, The North Face® Kalymnos Climbing Festival is set to be packed with competition, newly bolted routes, spectacular climbing, story-telling from world-class athletes, lots of sun, fun and prize money up for grabs.
New difficulty levels have been added to the OPEN Marathon competition, now ranging from 3c to 7a (according to the French grading system), bringing the total number of routes for all competitions to an astonishing 551.
Tackling the challenging routes of the PROject contest, globally renowned The North Face® athletes Yuji Hirayama (JAP), Sam Elias (USA), Felipe Camarga (BRA), Caroline Ciavaldini (FRA), amongst others, will be joined by some of the world’s leading climbers: Gabriele Moroni (ITA); Nicolas Favresse (BEL); Kilian Fischhuber (AUT); Michael Fuselier (FRA); Dani Andrada (ESP); Anna Stöhr (AUT); Melissa Le Neve (FRA); Barbara Zangerl (AUT); and, Daila Ojeda (ESP).
Whilst the sun sets over a long day of climbing on Friday 28th September 2012, The North Face® climbers James Pearson (UK) and French partner Caroline Ciavaldini, will be joined by special guest, Belgian Nicolas Favresse, to tell stories of adventure and exploration in the world’s most remote climbing locations.
Final competition celebrations commence at 20.30 on Saturday 29th September 2012, with a traditional Greek dinner, drinks & music, followed by the official prize giving for all competitions and a pool party with live DJ set at The North Face® Base Camp.
Climbing fans and followers will be continually updated via The North Face® social media channels and The North Face® Journal. Climbers can share their images from the week in real time to help build The North Face® Kalymnos Climbing Festival ‘Wall Of Fame’, a digital platform that collates images into a virtual photographic wall.

Open to climbers of all levels, The North Face® Kalymnos Festival comprises three contests – OPEN Marathon, BIG Marathon, and the PROject competition. In collaboration with the municipality of Kalymnos, the PROject competition is set on a virgin crag and is based on 8 technically difficult routes specially bolted for the event. The €10,000 prize money will be divided by the number of successful repetitions on each route.
Taking place on existing sectors, the OPEN Marathon is built for teams of two, with male, female and mixed categories. All 388 routes have a minimum difficulty level of 3c to maximum of 7a (according to the French grading system). Scoring is based on team performance. BIG Marathon, also for teams of two, with male, female and mixed categories, and scored overall, expose 155 routes with a minimum difficulty level of 7a+ to a maximum of 8a (according to the French grading system). Prizes consist of The North Face products with a total value of €5,000.
