The North Face® Lavaredo Ultra Trail 2016
Trail running world comes to Cortina for weekend of epic competition
The 2016 edition of the The North Face® Lavaredo Ultra Trail, part of the Ultra-Trail World Tour, saw 1500 runners from 60 countries around the world take part, all arriving in Cortina to explore some of the most iconic and distinguished mountain landscapes in the world. Athletes were faced with a mixture of conditions over the weekend from searing sunshine to alpine downpours as they made their way round a 119km course that features everything from rocky climbs to sweeping valley paths.
Setting out on the evening of Friday June 24th, The North Face® athlete team of Fernanda Maciel (BRAZIL), Jez Bragg (UK), Lizzy Hawker (UK), Rory Bosio (USA), and Mike Foote (USA) began one of the most iconic routes in ultra-trail running through the Lavaredo region of the Sexten Dolomities.
Notable highlights included Fernanda bagging a third place finish in a time of 15:20:57, with Lizzy also cementing a spot in the top 10 finishing in 9th thanks to a 17:32:15 run. On top of this, team runner, Hillary Allen (USA) stormed to victory in the Cortina Trail (47km), coming over the line as the first female on the Sunday afternoon, and seventh overall including the men with a time of 5:15:56.
“I’m so happy to have taken third place; I love coming to Cortina to compete and this has rounded off a brilliant weekend,” said Maciel.
Allen added, “It was my first time racing in Cortina, and I was blown away by everything from the unbelievable scenery to the energetic support and wonderful atmosphere. Winning the race was an awesome feeling, and I can’t wait to come back!”
